Instrument-Assisted Soft-Tissue Mobilisation 'IASTM' for short has been shown in scientific literature to be a formidable option for soft-tissue therapy, particularly when dealing with older chronic connective tissue injuries that were not properly rehabilitated when the initial injury occurred or in cases where excessive scar tissue from a surgical procedure limits the full potential of restored function. Dr. Riccardo Tersigni D.C. explains and demonstrates Graston Technique, a particular brand of IASTM very similar to that used with Chiromechanics:
Old muscle tears causing weakness and pain and repeated ligament sprains causing pain and stiffness (both instances due to scar tissue build-up) are just two examples of conditions treated with IASTM. IASTM is only the beginning of a complete treatment, by recreating inflammation it allows the patient a ‘second chance’ for proper rehabilitation to the soft-tissue structures, creating stronger and more functional tissues through the use of other elements such as soft-tissue stretching and exercise rehabilitation.
The smooth metallic tool is very gently, but quickly moved across the patient’s skin and tissues close to the skin’s surface in many different directions over the affected muscle/ligament/capsule in a form of cross-friction massage. To the patient this therapy is often perceived as a warming sensation as the technique calls the body’s attention to the injured area in the form of increased blood flow. Rehabilitation exercise to re-educate the muscle’s, or other structure’s, function for optimal performance is often essential along with Instrument-Assisted Soft-Tissue Mobilisation and can be the key factor in preventing a recurrence in the future.
