Strength and Conditioning
A Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist is a physical trainer with a University education in the health sciences plus specific post-graduate studies in the physical conditioning of athletes for performance in sports. They conduct sport-specific testing sessions, design and implement safe and effective strength training and conditioning programs and provide guidance regarding nutrition and injury prevention. Athletic testing typically precedes all training as it identifies distinct areas of weakness that will direct the roadmap for a specific and individualized program. Testing at later dates helps the athlete and trainer identify program effectiveness. Strength and conditioning training varies from fitness training in that performance goals take precedence. To achieve these goals athletes must enable different training techniques and programming styles. Training techniques typically used with athletes include:
Athletes must be set on a program specific to their sport season and major competitive dates. This is called periodization. Pre-season, off-season, in-season and post-season all have different goals and require different training methods to be utilized to be in top condition for competition. Micro-periodization may even be necessary for those athletes in sports with particularly long competitive season. All these methods keep an athlete at the top of their game, in tip-top shape, and injury-resistant so they can play more of the season.
